Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through her aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse, who worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to art literature and theatre. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay developed a social aware from her mother. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the civil rights march of the past along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just an elementary school student. She began working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk of a jury member's home. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful. Melanie Jayne Lynskey was born on May 16, 1977, in New Zealand. She is well-known for her unique voice, which is soft and confident. She is primarily involved in independent films.
